Learning sauna etiquette at a wellness center
A real situation from the OGIMA community · Everyday Life
The scene
A regular notices you edging toward the wrong door and quietly steers you right — towel placement first, then the no-phone rule, then the Aufguss schedule. You thank them with your eyes and follow their lead into the heat.
Why this moment is tricky in Germany
German Saunakultur — gender-mixed, towel-required, nudity-normalized, silence-preferred — is a culture shock for newcomers from swimsuit-default countries, and regulars often coach outsiders through the rules with patience rather than judgement. Aufguss ceremonies are taken seriously. In cultures where sauna use is private or swimsuit-based, the etiquette gap is large and the onboarding moment is genuine.
Rehearse it before it happens
This situation is practised out loud in OGIMA: you speak, an AI conversation partner answers back, and you rerun it until the real thing feels routine.
