Pre-class small talk at morning yoga

A real situation from the OGIMA community · Everyday Life

The scene

You're unrolling your mat, the person next to you smiles, and the two minutes before the teacher starts are your window for a hello.

Why this moment is tricky in Germany

Yoga studios (Yogastudios) in Germany have exploded in popularity — Berlin alone has over 200. The pre-class window is a brief social moment: 'Ist hier noch frei?' (is this spot free?) when placing your mat, 'Warst du schon mal hier?' (have you been here before?) as an opener. German yoga has its own vocabulary mix: Sanskrit terms are kept (Shavasana, Namaste), but instructions are in German: 'Einatmen' (inhale), 'Ausatmen' (exhale), 'Streckt die Arme' (stretch your arms), 'Beugt euch nach vorne' (bend forward). The greeting depends on time and formality: morning classes get 'Guten Morgen' or a casual 'Morgen', while the teacher typically opens with 'Willkommen' (welcome) or 'Schön, dass ihr da seid' (nice that you're here). Post-class, the phrase 'Das war gut' (that was good) or 'Bis nächste Woche' (see you next week) signals you're becoming a regular. German yoga culture is less competitive than in some countries — the emphasis on Achtsamkeit (mindfulness) extends to the social interactions around it.

Rehearse it before it happens
