Asking the Späti cashier where the ATM is
A real situation from the OGIMA community · Everyday Berlin
The scene
You lean into the counter while buying a Club Mate and ask the cashier which direction has a working cash machine. He gestures with his chin toward the corner and doesn't look up.
Why this moment is tricky in Germany
Berlin Späti-cashier culture is famously laconic — the chin-nod direction is the standard response, and the cashier's geographic knowledge is a point of neighborhood pride rather than a customer-service offering. In corner-shop cultures with chatty staff, the chin-nod would read as rude rather than normal.
Rehearse it before it happens
This situation is practised out loud in OGIMA: you speak, an AI conversation partner answers back, and you rerun it until the real thing feels routine.
