Video-calling a neighbor for a salt substitute
A real situation from the OGIMA community · Expat Life
The scene
It's 10 pm, the neighbor's not answering the door, but her phone rings. She picks up from bed, camera pointed at the ceiling, and you're on the balcony showing her the empty shaker. You need to ask if there's anything usable in her pantry instead.
Why this moment is tricky in Germany
Late-evening video calls for small favors are normal among expat friend-neighbors in Berlin. In more reserved German social circles, a text would be the default — a video call implies you already have a close relationship with that person.
Rehearse it before it happens
This situation is practised out loud in OGIMA: you speak, an AI conversation partner answers back, and you rerun it until the real thing feels routine.
