The scene

Why this moment is tricky in Germany
Ladenschlussgesetz and similar Sunday-closure rules across Austria, parts of Switzerland, and segments of Germany force a weekly planning discipline that countries with always-open retail (UK, US, Japan) do not require. The Sunday-morning realization that nothing is open is a recognizable expat rite of passage and a recurring stairwell conversation among long-term residents too. Neighbors bond over shared failure to remember. In the UK everyone just walks to Tesco Express; the scene barely happens.
