Why this moment is tricky in Germany
On-call paging etiquette is practiced and specific: a clean two-sentence opener — patient, ward, what changed — a clear ask, and a concise recommendation. German Diensttelefon culture leans formal, where a respectful address is not unusual even at 3 am; US and UK paging is first-name direct. Countries with newer paging systems like South Korea and Japan still use them; some smaller hospitals globally lean on WhatsApp groups and personal phones, which creates its own documentation problems. The night call is stressful everywhere; the opening sentence is rehearsed everywhere too.
