Language tandem at the neighborhood café
A real situation from the OGIMA community · Everyday Life
The scene
Your Tandempartner just sat down, ordered in perfect German, and now it's your turn to keep up for the next hour.
Why this moment is tricky in Germany
Sprachtandem (language tandem) is a one-on-one language exchange format popular across Germany — you spend 30 minutes speaking your partner's language, then 30 minutes speaking yours. The standard phrases: 'Sollen wir auf Deutsch anfangen?' (shall we start in German?), 'Wie sagt man das auf Deutsch?' (how do you say that in German?), 'Kannst du das nochmal sagen?' (can you say that again?). Tandems are found through apps (Tandem, HelloTalk), university bulletin boards (Schwarzes Brett), and café notice boards. The neighborhood café is the default meeting spot — ordering together is the warm-up: 'Ich nehme einen Milchkaffee' (I'll have a milky coffee). The etiquette: correct gently, not every error — 'Meinst du vielleicht...?' (do you maybe mean...?) is the polite correction format. Unlike group language exchanges, tandems build deeper vocabulary because the conversation follows your actual life topics, not structured prompts.
Rehearse it before it happens
This situation is practised out loud in OGIMA: you speak, an AI conversation partner answers back, and you rerun it until the real thing feels routine.
