Why this moment is tricky in Germany
German school math leans on Tafelanschrieb — the teacher walks a problem through on the blackboard while students copy quietly — and interrupting mid-derivation is a bigger deal than in American seminar-style classrooms. Silent focused copying is the norm; raising your hand mid-step reads as either bold or disruptive depending on the teacher. In places where interactive questioning is expected from the start, this 'wait until the step is done' dynamic feels unnecessarily formal.
