Career doubts on a park bench with a friend
A real situation from the OGIMA community · Everyday Life
The scene
You're walking through the park, your friend asks how the new job is going, and the honest answer is complicated.
Why this moment is tricky in Germany
Career reflection conversations (Berufsgespräche) in Germany carry a specific cultural weight. Germans value Berufung (calling/vocation) alongside Beruf (profession), and questioning your career path is seen as mature, not weak. The park walk (Spaziergang) is the traditional German setting for deep conversations — walking side by side removes the pressure of face-to-face intensity. Useful phrases: 'Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob das der richtige Weg ist' (I'm not sure this is the right path), 'Ich überlege, mich umzuorientieren' (I'm thinking of changing direction), 'Was würdest du an meiner Stelle tun?' (what would you do in my place?). German career culture has strong Ausbildung (vocational training) and Studium (university) tracks — switching between them is more accepted than in many countries but still involves bureaucracy. The concept of Selbstverwirklichung (self-actualization) through work is deeply German, making career dissatisfaction a legitimate topic among friends rather than something to hide.
Rehearse it before it happens
