Duolingo is, by a distance, the best habit-building product language learning has ever produced. The streak works. Hundreds of millions of people open it daily, which is a genuinely hard problem solved well, and any comparison that sneers at it is not being honest.

It is also not a speaking app, and it does not really claim to be. The gap between those two facts is where most of this comparison lives — and it is a gap a lot of people discover the hard way, after a year of daily practice, the first time someone asks them a question out loud.

Where Duolingo is the better choice

  • You are starting from zero. Duolingo’s early course is well built, free, and less intimidating than anything else. Building your first few hundred words there is a perfectly good plan.
  • You need a language OGIMA does not cover. OGIMA is English, German, Spanish, Italian and French. Duolingo has dozens, including languages nobody else bothers with.
  • You struggle to keep a habit. This is the real product. If the streak is the only reason you have studied at all this year, that is not a small thing — protect it.
  • Budget is the binding constraint. Duolingo’s free tier is genuinely usable rather than a trial in disguise.

Where OGIMA is the better choice

  • You can already follow the language and cannot speak it. This is the specific problem. Recognition outruns production for almost every learner, and the fix is producing.
  • Your language is for particular situations. OGIMA builds lessons around named situations — a work meeting, an appointment, a conversation you are dreading — rather than around levels.
  • You want to practise with people. OGIMA includes meeting other learners in your city in person. Duolingo has no equivalent.
  • You want correction on how you talk, not on whether you picked the right tile.

Why doesn’t the Duolingo streak become speech?

Worth understanding, because it explains the whole comparison. Duolingo’s core interactions are:

  • choose the correct translation
  • tap the words in the right order
  • match the pairs
  • fill the gap

Every one of those gives you the language and asks you to identify something about it. Speaking gives you nothing and asks you to generate it, quickly, while a person waits. That is a categorically harder task, and the research on second-language production is consistent that it improves mainly through producing.

So a 365-day streak reliably produces someone who understands quite a lot of German and cannot order confidently in it. That is not a failure of effort. It is the tool doing exactly what it does.

The honest recommendation: run both

For most people the right answer is not to switch. It is:

  1. Keep Duolingo for the daily habit and vocabulary, especially early on.
  2. Add something speaking-first the moment you can roughly follow a simple conversation. Earlier than feels comfortable.
  3. Stop measuring progress by the streak once speaking is the goal, because the streak stops correlating with the thing you care about.

The failure mode is not using Duolingo. It is using only Duolingo for two years and concluding you are bad at languages.

Duolingo has a large German course and it is a reasonable place to start from zero. For actually speaking German — the cases and verb-final structure you have to produce in real time, and the specific situations you face in Germany — you need something that makes you talk. Many learners use Duolingo early and add a speaking tool once they can follow a conversation.
